There's a saying, "Demography is destiny." Is it really true?

If the earth, oceans, and sky have their natural laws, then does the growth, reproduction, and change of human populations also have their own laws of life and death?

 

Since the Scientific Revolution, with the maturation of statistical methods, demographers' toolkits have become increasingly rich with treasured insights, capable of explaining demographic transitions, predicting population changes, and inferring demographic dynamics. They can move beyond individual cases to see a broader picture, providing scientific foundations for economic development and national policies.

 

The core of demography revolves around the driving forces of population change (namely, mortality, fertility, and migration), exploring how populations change under the interplay of these factors. Urban-rural migration, immigration policies, declining birth rates, aging populations, gender relations, healthcare systems, and so on, are all subjects of demographic research. However, these topics heavily rely on further explanations from other social sciences, making demography a truly interdisciplinary field.
