In 1875, the world looked at the light and shadow of the mysterious east of Formosa through his lens, which he revealed step by step with his camera and pen.

In 1862, British photographer John Thomson arrived in Singapore and began a ten-year journey in Asia. In addition to running a photo studio business, he became very interested in photographing the customs and customs of the Far East. Having lived in East Asia for ten years, his footprints have spread all over the Straits of Malacca, Indochina, Taiwan, and the north and south of China. In the era when photography technology was just beginning, Thomson traveled with a heavy camera, over mountains and across oceans, recording people, villages, buildings and cultural landscapes in various places using wet plate photography technology. He combined the images and hand-drawn drawings he took while traveling to various Asian countries with text, and compiled "Ten Years of Travels", a work that combines memoirs and photography, with both text and pictures.

In the second half of the nineteenth century, Thomson's camera captured the first moment of the intersection of modern East and West, and his writing penetrated into different aspects of the turbulent country. Through his lens and pen, European and American readers saw the Old Orient under the mysterious veil for the first time. Thomson not only presents novel exotic customs, landscapes, and architectural styles, but also has rich and nuanced observations about Asian people and society. His records cover a wide range of topics including street beggars, peddlers, dignitaries, ordinary people's lives, royal ceremonies, and society. question. In "Ten Years of Travels", he devoted himself to depicting the true appearance of the vast Far East. At a time when the relationship between the East and the West was becoming increasingly frequent, he frankly and accurately outlined for the public the rays of light and shadow in Asia, as well as the world of ordinary people that was most lacking in official history. Through Thomson's profound and arduous records, the rich natural ecology, indigenous life, and cultural features of southwestern Formosa Island have reached the eyes of Western readers for the first time.

When "Ten Years of Travels" was first published, printing technology was not yet sufficient to print photos in newspapers, periodicals, and books. Therefore, every picture in the book was carved into detailed patterns by woodcutters using Thomson's photos and drawings as samples. Mukou woodblock printing. This book was published in London and New York in 1875, and was translated into French and published in Paris in 1877. The two editions contain slightly different pictures and texts. The Chinese version integrates the picture and text translations of the English and French versions, and strives to fully bring the Asian features seen by the European and American public at that time to Chinese readers.
