Between 1974 and 1976 , Fromm wrote To Have or To Be? 》( To Have or to Be? ). Some of the content was not published when it was actually published, and this book is based on these uncollected content.

Fromm believes that "the art of existence" refers to "a lifestyle based on true self-awareness", which can be said to be the ultimate goal of life and must be achieved through honest self-analysis.

In "The Art of Existence", he uses his own experience and understanding to elaborate on the "steps towards existence" required to learn the "Art of Existence". The first half of the book discusses the highly consumptive nature of contemporary society, which makes it easy for people to regard "possession" as the only indicator of satisfying needs; the second half briefly describes how to practice the "art of living" through awareness and self-analysis, so as to achieve True joy and happiness.

Being aware and practicing concentration are key steps in learning the art of being. The "awareness" emphasized by Fromm refers to a highly concentrated attention that enables self-observation of one's own physical or mental state. Only through awareness can we gain independent thinking about ourselves and not be swayed by irrational authorities and idols.

Fromm believes that although power and fame have a hypnotic charm, what is more terrifying than material falsehood is the falsehood that humans encounter in the pursuit of happiness, inner growth and joy. He reminds us not to trust courses that claim to quickly change one's personality or achieve self-realization. Instead, we should face loneliness and pain bravely and devote all our energy to pursuing our true goals.
