Cosmic Meridians

Chinese artist Guo Fengyi began practicing Qigong to alleviate pain. During her practice, she gradually came to understand the philosophies of life, and numerous visual images continually emerged, compelling her to express them through painting to balance her mind and body.

Inspired by traditional Chinese thought, Guo Fengyi's creative themes revolve around ancient cosmology, acupuncture point charts, the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, the River Chart and Luo River Book, imperial tombs, and divination. "Guo Fengyi: Cosmic Meridians" explores Guo Fengyi's creative journey through keywords such as "nomenclature," "Qigong," "introspection," "remote viewing," "lines," "numbers," "ancient cosmology," and "cosmic meridians."

The book is divided into two volumes, left and right, and includes 70 artworks and two essays, expounding on the artist's creative thinking and philosophy. The left volume focuses on Guo Fengyi's early works from 1989 onwards, exploring the origins of her artistic career and her creative motivations. The right volume features pull-out pages displaying her representative works. Hidden within the pages are heavens and earths, revealed by the reader's hands, allowing for a complete view of the artworks and uncovering Guo Fengyi's original intention—everything is for "the pursuit of knowledge."

"What I want to paint, I write in the middle of the paper, and then I draw stroke by stroke with 'qi.' Before I draw, I don't know what will come out; only after I finish drawing do I know what it is. Looking at it again later, I discover many more things. I draw because I don't know; drawing is for knowing."
