Liu Yichang: I have no intention of writing a historical novel, but I do intend to add an annotation to Hong Kong history.

Hong Kong is heaven and hell.
Hong Kong is a drama, and no one can tell whether it is a comedy or a tragedy.

Hong Kong's social order is like a shattered jar, and some people are trying to reassemble the pieces.
The ordinary people seemed to be sitting in a small boat, struggling in the rough sea. If they were not careful, the boat would capsize.

"Island and Peninsula" was written in 1973, the year when the Hong Kong stock market suffered the worst stock market crash in its history. The Hang Seng Index plummeted by more than 90% within a year, causing tens of thousands of citizens to go bankrupt. The severe economic damage, oil crisis, water and electricity rationing, soaring prices, unemployment, and deteriorating public security made Hong Kong fall from heaven to hell this year. Incited by the media, people's panic intensified, and chaos began to rob supplies. By depicting the daily life of the protagonist Sha Fan's family, Liu Yichang provided the audience with a window into the city and presented Hong Kong society in the 1970s.

This book is a work serialized by Liu Yichang in "Sing Tao Evening News" from 1973 to 1975. It was not published in Hong Kong until 1993. The original book has more than 600,000 words. When it was completed, Liu Yichang deleted more than 500,000 words to create a more concise version. This book is also published in Taiwan for the first time.
