Bus Tyrannosaurus

"Bus Tyrannosaurus" is the latest children's picture book released in 2020 by the famous Japanese cartoonist "Daisuke Igarashi". Daisuke Igarashi is known for his superb painting skills and delicate descriptions of nature. He has twice won Japan's iconic award "Excellence Award in the Manga Division of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival". His representative works include: "The Witch", "Children of the Sea", "Komori Time" and so on, among which "Children of the Sea" was made into an animated film and released in 2019 (the production company is STUDIO4℃, the soundtrack is Joe Hisaishi).

In addition to creating comics, Daisuke Igarashi also tried to branch out into picture books. In 2013, he released his first fully-created picture book, "Hear the Mermaid Singing" (Mermaid's Singing), with gorgeous and complex pictures. After 7 years, I finally released my personal picture book "Bus Tyrannosaurus". At this time, my style became more restrained, and both the expression techniques and emotions had a sense of tranquility and ghostliness.

"Bus Tyrannosaurus" describes a dilapidated and abandoned bus in the forest that has been forgotten for decades. One night, it suddenly grows arms, legs and a tail, and turns into a "Bus Tyrannosaurus", and it starts to move! Then, the Bus Tyrannosaurus slowly walked toward town. All kinds of strange noises were made along the way, which scared wild cats and stray dogs, but unexpectedly, when the bus Tyrannosaurus was taking a break on the street, an old woman got on the bus. The old lady didn’t find anything strange about this bus, so she got off the bus when it arrived at the stop. After that, the Bus Tyrannosaurus came to pick up the old lady at the same time every day.

But one day, the old lady didn't show up. He didn’t come the next day, and the next day after that. The bus tyrannosaurus still waits for the old lady at the bus stop every day. Waited for five days, ten days, a hundred days. After a thousand days, the Bus Tyrannosaurus decided to leave the town. Where is it going? Who will you meet again?

This picture book has the flavor of Miyazaki Hayao's "My Neighbor Totoro Bus", in which Daisuke Igarashi once again demonstrates his ability to leisurely explore humans and animals, humans and nature, reality and surreality. At the same time, through the genre and form of children's picture books, his stories and pictures are purer, allowing readers to feel the magical moments in the quiet night.
