Spring's Little Creatures

In the spring of 2024, Chen Wen-Hsiang (Penny) and Yang Jie-Lin held the "Spring Bug" exhibition at Treasure Hill's Jiantou Cafe, showcasing a collection of pure collage works by their friends. The book "The Bugs' Spring Exploration" is an extension of this exhibition.

The "Spring Bug" exhibition used symbols gathered from walks, transforming them from license plates, signs, and road markers into the eyes, bodies, and wings of animals, finally presenting the collage results on flat paper. Inside Jiantou, structures connected to the outside world were used as display mediums, allowing the little bugs to quietly move through the crevices of pipes and floor tiles, blurring the lines between inside and out.

The book "The Bugs' Spring Exploration" transitions the setting from the exhibition space to a picture book. This book depicts the spring bugs, with a caterpillar as the protagonist, embarking on an adventurous journey to find spring, a road trip story where they meet friends along the way; it is also this book that brought the authors back together. We continued to use the characters created for the exhibition, redesigning their living environments. Following our previous method of creating bugs, we collaged scenes using symbols on the computer, then decomposed and printed the symbols used in the initial scene drafts onto paper. These were then cut out along with special colored paper hand-drawn with crayons, giving each symbol a unique appearance. Finally, these symbols were collaged together according to the initial draft, creating the peculiar world of the bugs.
