How do we understand contemporary Chinese families? How have societal changes affected our relationships with partners, children, and across generations?

In the process of China's modernization, the "family" as a core social unit has also undergone multiple changes: individuals are more independent, yet families still bear the heavy responsibility of care and emotional support; the patriarchal family structure has gradually loosened, but gendered division of labor and responsibilities continue to be placed on women in new forms; the traditional concept of "filial piety" seems to be declining, yet the symbiosis and interdependence among family members are becoming increasingly close. These tensions and contradictions constitute an unavoidable daily experience for contemporary Chinese people.

From a feminist perspective, the author analyzes various phenomena in contemporary Chinese families, dissecting the structural changes and their causes, by focusing on women's daily lives and family experiences. Through examining the lives of women from different generations and with varying family roles, this book presents a family landscape interwoven with emotions and responsibilities, where tradition and modernity coexist—a landscape deeply rooted in the East Asian context, yet pointing to a unique path of family evolution in China.
