Unknown Hong Kong's rough architecture
Unknown Hong Kong's rough architecture
Starting from scratch, restoring the spiritual outlook of local rough architecture
Over the years, rough architecture has been misunderstood. Some people think it is incompatible with urban space, while others criticize the concrete appearance for being cold, tasteless and dilapidated. Some people think it is ugly, but many people actually know nothing about it.
Brutalism advocates the concept of "As Found": pursuing the use of authentic materials, designing the current situation realistically, and allowing the building to present the most objective reality.
The period from the 1960s to the 1980s was the period between the post-war period and the economic boom. Hong Kong began to breathe in sync with the pulse of the world. This book introduces 20 groups of Hong Kong's rugged buildings and the stories of 12 architects, showing a sense of keeping up with world trends. The avant-garde design adds international color to the local urban landscape. At the same time, it also reflects the humanistic scenery at that time: simplicity and the spirit of pursuing basic life.
The three-year study attempted to fill the historical gaps, open the door to discussion, and allow professionals, conservation experts and the general public to jointly search for the "unknown" fate of these buildings: Should they "go"? Or "stay"?
