Macao boasts a history of East-West trade and cultural exchange spanning over four centuries, leaving behind a wealth of Western and Chinese architectural styles. Among these, the most iconic, the "Historic Centre of Macao," has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. While many books have already introduced the Chinese and Western architectural wonders within the Historic Centre, Macao actually holds many other buildings beyond this area that are well worth discovering.
The purpose of this book is to help readers rediscover the hidden aesthetic beauty in buildings of different periods and styles scattered throughout Macao, from the Neoclassical styles of the late 19th century, through the eclectic classicism of the early 20th century, to Art Deco starting in the 1930s, as well as "Portuguese house" styles, Modernism, Postmodernism... These represent Macao's architectural aesthetics before it embraced the even more diverse design forms of the 21st century.
The book is divided into five parts. Each part selects representative buildings with identifiable designers as its main focus, then briefly introduces related or nearby distinctive structures. Using these focal examples, the book constructs the developmental脉絡 of Macao's architectural aesthetics. Readers can take this book and wander through Macao's streets and alleys, discovering alternative "photo spots," appreciating the architectural beauty of the city, and delving deeper into the historical and cultural significance they embody.
