Under the pressure of neoliberal economic value indicators, contemporary art museums are obviously facing severe challenges in elaborating their own cultural values. How to find feasible alternatives has become an urgent cultural task.
In this book, Bishop uses three museums: the Van Abbe Museum of Contemporary Art in the Netherlands, the Reina Sofia National Art Center Museum in Spain, and the Metkowa Museum of Contemporary Art in Slovenia to illustrate a more experimental and radical art museum in the 21st century. Thinking: "dialectical contemporaneity" (dialectical contemporaneity) - these museums are committed to rethinking the category of "contemporaneity", understanding contemporaneity as a dialectical method and a project with political color, a kind of understanding of temporality (temporality) a more radical discussion. This allows us to rethink the functions of contemporary museums, the scope of museum collections, and the viewing patterns shaped by such museums.
