This book can be read as an extension of Foucault's previous works, but it also marks a decisive new leap forward. ——Gilles Deleuze
"Surveiller et punir: naissance de la prison" (Surveiller et punir: naissance de la prison) was published in 1975. The previously circulated Chinese version of the book was titled "Discipline and Punir: The Birth of the Prison". This version is based on the original French version. Re-translated. The book is divided into four parts: torture, punishment, discipline and prison. Starting from a failed and cruel torture and a prisoner's schedule, it begins to explore the huge changes in the punishment system, showing the changes in power and society with each change in punishment.
In this book, Michel Foucault shows how in the classical period, the punishment effect was obtained by openly and cruelly inflicting punishment on the body of the victim; after the French Revolution, it gradually shifted to sentencing all criminals to the same punishment-prison. The modern prison was born; and Bentham's "panopticon" inverted the principles of the dungeon - confinement, light deprivation and concealment - and retained the concept of confinement. The central tower and the large window facing the inside of the ring-shaped building provide enough light and the watcher's view, making it a continuous view. This kind of architectural design is not limited to prisons, but is more suitable for hospitals, schools or factories. Panorama is not only a specific architectural model, but also a clear form of disciplinary power. It is also destined to spread and increase in society, making modern society a surveillance and disciplinary society.
As Foucault mentioned in the book: "The purpose of this book: a history of the modern soul and the new judicial power; a set of accounts of the current scientific-judicial complex in which the power of punishment has acquired Its foundations, grounds of acquisition, and rules extend its influence and obscure the peculiarity of its judicial transgressions - its genealogy."
