"One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." — Simone de Beauvoir
In 1949, a world-changing classic philosophical work was published in Paris. This was just after World War II, a time when women still faced many visible and invisible oppressions in society. The author used over 700,000 words to comprehensively discuss women. Her ideas were like an atomic bomb dropped into the Western world, causing immense sensation and resonance. It not only sparked the feminist movement after the 1960s but also laid the foundation for women's rights in the 20th century. This work was Simone de Beauvoir's *The Second Sex*.
The content of *The Second Sex* is vast and profound, discussing women from various perspectives including literature, history, mythology, sociology, biology, and medicine. The book breaks away from the dry and obscure nature of theoretical works, instead citing numerous real-life examples that are vivid and detailed. It comprehensively examines the actual conditions of women's situations, status, and power throughout historical evolution. It is an unparalleled classic that possesses both breadth and depth, offering an overview of the entire female world.
"Women do not need to prove themselves to be women; women should be regarded as complete and full human beings." *The Second Sex* will lead us step by step through Beauvoir's thought process, from the dilemmas women face to how women can create their own choices after profound self-awareness. The clear logic and precise critiques in *The Second Sex* remain unmatched by other works to this day. It is not only regarded as a global declaration for "women's liberation" in the West but has also become a pivotal work in contemporary feminist thought.
Translated word for word from the original French, the complete translation makes its debut.
For over sixty years, the translation of *The Second Sex* has been widely acknowledged as challenging due to its broad academic scope and deep philosophical implications. For example, early English translations were criticized not only for their lack of completeness but also for failing to translate the philosophical terminology used by Beauvoir. Even later new translations were criticized for poor fluency and inability to precisely convey the meaning, and to this day, no satisfactory translation has emerged.
The previous two traditional Chinese translations of *The Second Sex* were also based on English translations, and some content, like the English versions, was omitted, preventing readers from fully understanding this work in depth. Now, we are re-releasing the classic complete Chinese translation of *The Second Sex*. We invited Qiu Ruiluan, a renowned translator of French literature, to undertake the translation directly from the original French. The process took six years, and she dedicated herself to overcoming the translation difficulties. She not only faithfully conveyed the philosophical layers and arguments of the original book but also showcased Beauvoir's extraordinary literary talent with elegant language, presenting this classic work by a 20th-century master in its most complete form and closest to the original to readers.
