Fungi are actually related to animals and distantly related to plants. Fungal cell walls are made of the same ingredients as human skin and insect exoskeletons.
The micrograph magnified more than 2,000 times shows that the shapes of the spores are ever-changing, looking like pods, tadpoles and stars. Some spores can even eject themselves when mature.
The soft mycelium can also penetrate hard stone surfaces and help scientists determine how old an object is.
