Yohji Yamamoto, the internationally renowned fashion designer known for his anti-fashion stance, rejection of gender concepts, and fusion of traditional Japanese clothing elements with avant-garde styles, was a Japanese pioneer alongside Rei Kawakubo who entered the French fashion scene in the 1980s, constantly making an impact on the world throughout his almost half-century career in fashion design. The image of his mother and the absence of his father planted the seeds of his clothing-making.
At the age of one, his father was conscripted and never returned. His mother, who ran a dressmaking shop, raised him alone. The sight of his mother sewing clothes day and night was the most common and touching scene in Yohji Yamamoto's upbringing. His unique "designing from the back" approach to clothing also originated from this.
To reassure his mother, he, who loved to draw since childhood, gave up on Tokyo University of the Arts and entered the Faculty of Law at Keio University. After graduating, he felt lost about his future. At his mother's insistence, he enrolled in Bunka Fashion College. In 1969, he won the "Soen Award" and "Endo Award" for new fashion designers and spent a year observing in Paris. During that time, he witnessed the end of the haute couture era. Upon returning home, he helped at his mother's shop and began to cultivate his dream of creating a brand of designer clothes. In 1972, he founded the studio "Y's Inc." Five years later, he held his first fashion show in Tokyo. In 1981, he launched his main brand, "Yohji Yamamoto," and made a stunning debut at Paris Fashion Week, becoming active on the international stage thereafter.
Looking back on his life, Yohji Yamamoto said that if his father had still been alive, perhaps he would not be who he is today.
