An old Pontiac sedan drives through the Ohio countryside. Suddenly, the car came to a sudden stop, and the girl's parents were surprised to find wild watercress growing in the ditch on the roadside. Grabbing old paper bags and rusty scissors, they pulled the girl and her brother out of the car and together they picked what they could of the mud- and snail-covered plants.

At first, the girl felt embarrassed and ashamed. Why can't her family buy food from the grocery store? But as her mother shares their family's history, the girl learns how important the plant was to her parents and begins to appreciate her own culture and the fresh foods they forage.

This book tells a touching autobiographical story. Through the inconspicuous weeds on the roadside in Ohio, it tells the troubles of Chinese immigrant families coming to the United States. The emotions and feelings it conveys are universal. The artist was inspired by Chinese painting techniques and used watercolor paintings full of realistic tension to enrich this story that carries the author's painful memories. In poetic words, the author turns memories into letters of apology and love letters to his parents. She hopes to encourage people to share memories, tell stories, be more empathetic to their parents’ actions, and be more affirmative of cultural inheritance.
