Manufacturing was once the backbone of Hong Kong's economy. After the war, capital and labor from the south provided an opportunity for the flourishing of Hong Kong's light industry from the 1950s to the 1980s. Toys, watches, apparel, and plastic products were marketed throughout Southeast Asia and even Europe and America, and many daily necessities were self-sufficient. Later, with rising costs and factories moving north, Hong Kong's manufacturing industry gradually declined.
