A Vibrant Voyage from China: The Whimsical World of Chinese Art

In the eyes of Westerners, Qing Dynasty China was mysterious and exotic. From the magnificent flower boats on the Pearl River to women's bound "three-inch golden lotus" feet, everything about it aroused great curiosity in Westerners. These fanciful notions about China created a market for export paintings. Pith paper paintings, which employed Western painting techniques, became popular in Guangzhou during the late Qing Dynasty in the 19th century. Due to their Chinese-style content, affordable price, and portability, they became highly sought-after souvenirs for European and American merchants, collectors, sailors, and others residing in the port. These small pith paper paintings not only helped bridge the gap in understanding between China and the West but also reflected Westerners' romanticized imagination of this foreign land.

This album showcases pith paper paintings from 19th-century Guangzhou, collected by the Chinese University of Hong Kong Library, presenting vivid scenes of life from yesteryear. After nearly two centuries of travel, these beautiful yet fragile "postcards" have returned to their place of origin. Although times have changed, the rich tapestry of Chinese life from a century ago has been preserved through these delicate pith paper paintings, which remain vibrant and colorful before us.
