[Decade]: Social movement ends, farming continues

This small book contains three reports of approximately ten thousand words each, stemming from the author's half-year fieldwork in Taiwan in the spring and summer of 2023, where they followed farmers A-Chou and Hsiao-Tien, among others. It is also the author's master's thesis from National Taiwan University's Graduate Institute of Journalism, supervised by Huang Shu-mei and Li Chih-te, and orally examined by Cheng Chao-chi and Chang Chieh-ping.

Many people believe that young social activists who move to the countryside to farm do so out of depression. However, through cultivation and conversations, the author discovered that transitioning from street protests to farming is a pursuit of a more genuine happiness. Born in Shenzhen and raised amidst rapid urbanization, the "post-90s" author initially viewed movements like anti-high-speed rail and preserving vegetable gardens as foolish and obstacles to progress. It wasn't until encountering conservationists and left-wing communities that they began to understand the creativity and value of these ideals. Unable to directly interview the key figure C, who is already incarcerated, the author chose to piece together that period of history and community memory indirectly through former social activists (now agricultural practitioners) who once stood alongside C.

After leaving their full-time reporter position in the latter half of 2025, the author resumed freelance writing, organizing and publishing these three nascent but valuable texts. With a print run of 500 copies, it serves as a message in a bottle. Inviting veterans like Mok Chiu-yu and Chan Kim-ching to respond, the author attempts to leave two "zeros" blank within the "noughties" generational gap, allowing readers to fill in their own understanding: What kind of era was this, after all?
