From visible to invisible light, after a period of rapid development, we revisit Taiwan's most captivating landscapes. From mountains to coastal plains, from rural villages to cities, the full-color film that precedes this book captures the scenery of the 1970s, and also foreshadows contemporary environmental issues in Taiwan, including the initial land subsidence and sand dredging in the Tamsui River. With color infrared film at its core, the invisible light reveals a boundary that overturns everyday vision; from rice production estimates to crop rotation surveys, from reservoir catchment areas to the collapse of hillside residences, from river pollution surveys to the establishment of an image database for major pollution areas, these tasks are linked to the dramatic changes in Taiwanese society from the 1970s to the 1990s. Starting with the central mountainous areas after Typhoon Herb, then the Jiji Earthquake, and the repeated scenes after Typhoon Toraji, color reversal film captured the full scale and immense trauma of natural disasters at the turn of the century. The Agricultural and Forestry Aerial Survey Institute (AFAI) archive, with over 800,000 frames of historical aerial film, is an incredibly vast and valuable repository of visual historical materials, recording the trajectory of Taiwan's economic growth and the landscapes collectively lost during its rapid development. Following the book "Reversing the Eye of War: Interpreting Taiwan's Landscape Context from Old US Military Aerial Photographs," the author delved into the AFAI archives, using first-hand operational records, annual reports, and oral materials to reconstruct the personnel landscape and mission development of AFAI. The scale of the AFAI archives allows us to re-select, focusing on analog-era film, with a core of fewer but lesser-known invisible light photographs, to gaze at the grandeur, intricacy, and complexity of Taiwan's landscape; each single frame of film contains vast details and unknown information. Every piece of image data, in the distant future, may reveal significant meaning. In the gaze of beauty, the lost time and space are connected, and the responsibility to see will also emerge.
