After the outbreak of World War III, nuclear weapons destroyed the world in just one month. Life in the Northern Hemisphere perished, falling into silence, and radioactive fallout was slowly drifting towards Australia in the south, like the footsteps of death.
Captain Dwight Towers of the American submarine USS Scorpion finds himself in Australia after drifting through the deep sea. He refuses to acknowledge that his homeland is gone and his wife and child are no more. He meets Moira, a passionate and intelligent woman who embraces life's remaining pleasures. They bare their vulnerable hearts to each other, igniting a sorrowful and silent spark. Australian Navy Lieutenant Peter Holmes has just welcomed his daughter's birth when he receives orders to leave home and serve as a liaison officer on the USS Scorpion. He is to sail with the Americans to investigate faint, unknown Morse code signals coming from Seattle—but could there truly be survivors in the lifeless Northern Hemisphere?
In a few more months, the radioactive fallout will reach Australia. How will these last remaining people on Earth re-experience their ordinary lives in these final days: beaches, sailing, parties, bars, friends and family, church, gardening, fishing, typing classes, car racing, cattle herding, farming... and then, bid farewell to it all?
Will a miracle happen?
