Jonas Mekas was born in Lithuania and moved to New York after World War II, where he gradually became a pioneer of American underground film and a barometer of the New York art world. He liked to use his camera to record his daily life and use it as material to make his own films. He also explored a new film style that was later called "diary film". From 1958 to 1977, Mekas published weekly conversations and discussions with filmmakers from around the world in the Village Voice magazine's "Movie Diary" column.

Back then, Mekas used a camera to record the interview scene, and then organized the text into the "Movie Diary" column, and attached stills or photos related to the interviewees as the introduction to each column. "Jonas Mekas: Conversations with a Filmmaker" brings together Mekas' interviews with filmmaker friends into a book for the first time. It includes some of the interviews published in the "Film Diary" column from 1961 to 1975. The participants include: : Storm de Hirsch, Louis Brigant, Andy Warhol, Nikos Papatakis, brothers Albert and David Maysles, Peter ·Kubel, Agnès Varda, Harry Smith, John Cassavetes, Stan Brakhage, Susan Sontag...The book also contains some works of great documentary value Pictures related to personal letters and conversations, with an index of relevant figures.


Jonas Mekas, born in Lithuania, came to Brooklyn via Germany in 1949 and began shooting his first films there. Mekas developed a form of film diary in which he recorded his daily observations. He became the barometer of the New York art scene and a pioneer of American avant-garde cinema. Every week, from 1958 until 1977, he published his “Movie Journal” column in the Village Voice, conducting numerous interviews with filmmakers from all over the world. Conversations is the first time that these interviews with his filmmaker friends and associates have been put together in a book. Mekas recorded the conversations with his camera. From the films he shot with his interlocutors, Mekas selected one photo or still to introduce each interview. The collection of texts is supplemented by letters and extracts from related scenarios /scripts and rounded out with an index of the people involved.
