On April 25, 2006, CBS, "New York Times", "Washington Post" and other major North American media reported the death of an old lady without a college degree and "professional" background. Jane Jacobs, author of The Birth and Fall of Cities. This is her first book and also her famous work, a classic that completely subverted the planning theory in Europe and America at that time. When it was first published in 1961, it was deeply rooted in the hearts of the people with its simple and easy-to-understand common people's point of view. After half a century, its influence continues to this day.

Starting from the perspective of urban physiology, this book points out the planning and reconstruction of the city, first of all to understand the mysterious and complex operation mode of the city, and the real life of urban people. The first part of the book summarizes the important position of street neighborhood in urban life from many real cases. The second part focuses on the general principle that cities require a very complex, nuanced, and diverse land use pattern that supports each other from time to time economically and socially. This is also the core of the author's argument. Part Three makes recommendations on housing, transportation, design, planning, and discusses the various issues cities face in dealing with organizational complexity. At the end of the book, it is emphasized that the city must be regarded as an organism with complex order, and the complex problems of urban planning must be dealt with by the social engineering of life sciences, only in this way can it be possible to give life and vitality to the city. This is the basic condition of a great city, and it is also the highest state. Otherwise, it is doomed to fail to only plan the appearance of the city without thinking about the inherent functional order of the city.

This book starts from the concept of "living city" such as the street life in the neighborhood and the diversity of commerce and culture, and emphasizes that only the "human scale" of diversity and mixing can create an "ordinary but great city". Therefore, the urban development strategy of large-scale development and razing-style renewal has been criticized. The "Book of the Century" selected and published by the New York City Library in 1996 compared it with Weber's "Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism", Keynes' "General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money", Webern's "The Leisure Class "On Economics and Technology" and other books are listed as one of the eleven most important classic masterpieces in the "Economy and Technology" category of the 20th century.
