"Readers who like my works, please read my comics! What I want to say is all drawn in the comics." ─ Zheng Wen
The first wave of "Zheng Wen's Works Collection", this hardcover edition includes the original five Assassin Biography comics, plus the first three issues of "The Last Duel", "Legend of the Sword Immortal" and "Executioner" in the first three issues of the Happy Comics Trial Issue in 1985 These three articles are the beginning of Zheng Wen's second golden age of Taiwanese comics.
The whole book "Biography of Assassins" is compiled based on the biography of assassins in "Historical Records" by Sima Qian, a historian of the Han Dynasty. The book collects the historical deeds of the five famous assassins Cao Mu, Yu Rang, Zhuan Zhu, Nie Zheng and Jing Ke in the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period. The story is in sequence: "Cao Mo" who held Duke Huan of Qi hostage and forced him to return the territory he had invaded from the State of Lu; Zhuan Zhu who assassinated Wang Liao for Prince Guang of Wu State; "Yurang" of Zhao Xiangzi, "Nie Zheng" who was entrusted by Yan Zhongzi to assassinate Han Xiangxialei, and "Jing Ke" who was ordered by Prince Yan to assassinate King Qin.
With his own care, Zheng Wen forcefully reinterprets the tragic colors in the original work, transforms Sima Qian's elegant narrative with ink painting techniques, and gives these stories resonance in the new era with incongruous tension. The imposing images all touched the assassins who were about to face a storm...
He once said in an interview that "persistence and reason" are heroes. Whatever belief you have, you should do it. These stories and characters are due to the times, and their "loyalty" is not the same as what we think of as "loyalty" now... But why did Zheng Wen still draw these people, because they have faith, they may lose their lives and ruin their reputations, but they still Do the same, so consider them heroes.
Zheng Wen said: "The most controversial part of the assassin's look is Yu Rang's neutral face. I originally set the idea to reflect Yu Rang's sacrifice and courage after his disfigurement; Nie Zheng, who slaughtered dogs, is always reminiscent of The obese butcher, I reshaped him into a martial arts student to draw out his helplessness in hiding in the market, and the landslide and ground crack when Cao Mo appeared on the stage was fictional to enhance the dramatic effect; I did not specifically reject blood and martial arts in the assassination, The main purpose is to use the chilling atmosphere to highlight the heroic and mournful minds of the assassins; for all these, if readers are interested, they can further appreciate the original text of Sima Qian's "Historical Records", which will have a different flavor."
This book was awarded the first prize of excellent comics by the National Institute of Compilation and Compilation in 1975. It has been published twice: the first edition was published by Times Times in 1985, and the second edition was published by Dala in 2010. In 2017, Da Lai re-created the master classic collection edition of "Assassin's Biography" for comic fans. It will be 18x26 cm in full-color hardcover, enlarging the master's classic works, making each comic a work of art.
To me, comics are like hatching eggs, a nest of eggs of all kinds. ── Zheng Wen
