"Ten Years of Travels - Malacca Strait, Indochina and China" is one of a series of works by the famous British photographer, traveler, geographer and documentary writer John Thomson (1837-1921). Thomson paired the images he took during his travels in Asia with text to form this book, which combines memories, texts and photographs. It was published in English in London and New York in 1875 and in French in Paris in 1877. This Chinese translation is based on the English and French versions. Thomson's views on Southeast Asia and China were frank and natural, and his attitude was friendly and sympathetic; his writings were the only important window at the time that allowed Europeans to glimpse the distant and mysterious face of Asia. As far as describing China is concerned, he not only captured the exotic customs of China, but also paid more attention to the social conditions, the lives of people from all walks of life, and the appearance of urban and rural areas in the turbulent environment of the late Qing Dynasty. It is worth mentioning that there are no photos in the book, but woodcut pictures. Because in the late nineteenth century, people didn't know how to print photographs in publications such as newspapers and magazines. The egg white photos (also called prints) at that time were actually reference pictures provided to woodcut masters when making "wood-engraving" (Wood-engraving).
