Until Death Do US Part

The book *Double Happiness* focuses on the unexpected role of cigarettes at Chinese weddings. "Cigarette敬獻" is a customary wedding tradition in China where the bride lights a cigarette for each male guest as a gesture of gratitude. Meanwhile, the bride and groom are asked to complete some crude but imaginative "smoking" games. This publication is a tribute to this perfect blend of love and death. All photographs are from the "Beijing Silvermine" project, an image database compiled by French artist Thomas Sauvin from discarded negatives salvaged year after year from Beijing's rubbish dumps. The project has organized over 500,000 negatives. He attempts to uncover the social changes China has undergone through these anonymous, discarded amateur images. The book's binding is specially printed to be the same size as a cigarette pack. Published by Jiazazhi in 2015, it has been listed as a photography book of the year by media outlets such as Photo-eye and The New York Times.
