On August 24, 2010, Japanese animation director Satoshi Kon died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 46. The animation works he left to the world are not many, but they are all amazing. The plots are full of imagination and psychological tension, the style is unique, the painting style is delicate, and they are full of human warmth: the first animated feature film "PERFECT BLUE" in 1998 ) attracted attention as soon as it was released. By dealing with the themes of Japanese idol culture, Kon accurately conveyed the characters' emotions and people's inner reflections, causing a sensation in the Western world that was new to Japanese animation works at the time. Later, "Millennium Actress" (2002), "Tokyo Godfathers" (2003), the TV animation "Paranoia Agent" (2004), and "Dream Detective" (2006) adapted from Tsutsui Yasutaka's novel of the same name. At that time, he was still planning his new work "Dream Machine" (Dream Machine). When the news of his death came out, animation fans around the world were filled with grief.
This book is a collection of commemorative short stories published by Kodansha after Kon Satoshi passed away. The book contains a total of 15 short stories from 1984 to 1989, 9 of which are included in a single volume for the first time, as well as the unpublished 1984 manga debut "Captain" (winner of the 10th Annual Chiba Tetsuya Comics by Weekly Young Magazine) Outstanding Newcomer Award). The book is extremely luxurious, with a total of 424 pages, including two lost original manuscripts that have also been reprinted and included. There are 15 works with various themes, including costume stories from the Warring States Period, horror stories about encountering ghosts, Santa Claus fairy tales that are warm but play with the concept of "time", as well as science fiction and suspense stories that Satoshi Kon is good at, etc.
Kon Satoshi, who once served as Otomo Katsuhiro's assistant, can clearly see Otomo's influence in his painting style. At the same time, the story also shows the young Kon Satoshi's resistance to the standard society, and the warm humanity and ancient style that will be seen in future animated films. Unbridled science fiction imagination.
