A graphic novel that profoundly depicts the inner emotions of modern people, and directly points to the most essential spiritual dilemma of human beings: the existence of loneliness
Facing the vast world outside, the unknown future makes people fearful
People, should they choose to live alone or bravely face the vast world?
European comic poet, Christophe Chabouté beautifully presents the depths of the human heart, the eternal feeling of loneliness and the longing for freedom with meticulous images.
The story of "Lonely" tells the story of a freak whose parents, out of love, imprisoned him on a lighthouse in the vast ocean, where he can only live with his imagination every day. Because of his ugly appearance, he was hidden in a lighthouse since he was born, isolated from the world, and lived alone for more than fifty years. Accompanying him is an old dictionary left by his parents, which is also his only connection with the outside world.
In every lonely night, he always weaves all kinds of wonderful, absurd and bizarre pictures in his mind with the help of dictionaries and imagination. It wasn't until a novice sailor helped him that he found a life that truly belonged to him.
The author Chabut uses a unique slow-paced narrative method to outline the themes in human nature, such as beauty and ugliness, loneliness, timidity, fear, yearning for freedom... and so on. Use rich scene transitions and detailed drawing of silhouettes and outlines to advance the storyline. At the same time, the works also cleverly capture the emotional images of things presented from different angles, full of mysterious and thought-provoking philosophical temperament.
"Solitude" was selected for the 2009 Angoulême International Comics Festival, and it is available in German, Japanese, Spanish, Polish and other languages. In April 2015, it was also staged by a French drama director.
