Fromm was the first psychological scholar to believe that "love" and the "ability to love" were worthy topics of discussion. In 1956, his specialized book on love, The Art of Loving, was published. Fromm told readers that love, like all other skills and knowledge in the world, can be learned; love is not something elusive, unattainable, or to be manipulated. Love has solid theories and practical methods. He tells you:
"Without love, humanity cannot exist for even a day." (The importance of love)
"Love is the active force in man." (Humans have the capacity for love and do not need to seek it externally)
"If I truly love one person, I love all persons, I love the world, I love life." (The ultimate expression of love)
Fromm explores "love" from all perspectives. Not just romantic love, which can lead to mistaken notions and illusory expectations, but also parental love, brotherly love, erotic love, self-love, and love of God. He further points out that love is actually about character development; to develop the capacity for love, to humbly, courageously, and genuinely love others, one can achieve this by striving to develop one's character.
"Love is an activity, the exercise of a human power." Fromm reminds us that love is not a distant ideal, but an inherent ability originating from within. For this reason, love is not difficult; it merely awaits us to recognize, learn, and practice it. It is precisely based on this understanding that The Art of Loving, a classic work published decades ago, has endured, spread widely, and continues to inspire generations to rethink: What is love? And how should we love?
