This book is a theoretical work on contentious politics researched by the renowned sociologist Charles Tilly in his later years. It primarily explores how contentious politics arises; why its forms of performance vary across different times and regions, and how these variations evolve; and how different forms of performance interact with each other. To answer these questions, Tilly proposed a theory of interaction between political opportunity structures, regime characteristics, and repertoires of contention, demonstrating that different regime characteristics influence political opportunity structures, which in turn affect the forms of contentious performance.
