The relationship between graphic design and archives has always been a love-hate relationship. In the era of discrete and discontinuous codes, the creative process is often cold, facing the luminous screen, the designer's daily experience may be inadvertently absent. From the imagination to the finished product, various unpredictable documents are produced, and they often meet like ghosts: the infinite inspiration provided by the search website is placed chaotically, the manuscripts that need to be digested for a long time are scattered in folders, occasional conversations, and pictures that take time to filter Submerging the original intention... Until the finished product appears, all the files are waiting to be described, discarded, and rewritten, but all the materials in the process are not design, and all are just to refer to design.
In the city-themed graphic design I have done, theater is one of the most ideological art forms. From text to vision, it needs to go through layers of concepts. In the collision with design, in addition to bringing the above-mentioned documents, Designers also need to read collectives, historical archives, news or other subjective products outside the theater.
In a world that tends to look purely, graphic design is for the purpose of visual dazzling, and the archives involved behind it are often absent, marginal, and lonely. Regarding the discussion between documents and art or creation, the theory put forward by contemporary art scholar Boris Groys is also often cited. He pointed out that all kinds of art documents refer to art, and because art itself is defined as art, instead Unable to be referred to as art, "it becomes clear that art no longer exists and is immediately seen, art is absent and hidden". That is to say, although documents, archives, documents, etc. do not directly present art, they make art appear. Art documents have also become one of the artistic life forms of art, and some pure activities and practices have filled the absence of art.
I also try to revisit the designs I have done. In the graphic design of theaters about the city, I try to put various design files, graphic files or documents, etc. in the public view, especially the performances I selected have different The public issues that the city cares about, the topic itself already has a certain degree of reality, and the disclosure of archives in various relationships may give people another new interpretation.
