Faced with this photo, we either ignore it or we have to fill it with meaning ourselves. This image, like all images that cannot be expressed in words, calls the viewer to make a decision. ──John. Berg
Photography is not John. Berg's major. Until the publication of "Another Image Narrative" in 1982, he had never written a special book on "photography". He does not talk about photography with the authority of a curator or photography historian, but approaches it as an art critic and writer.
Berg's creative career was rooted in the visual arts. In the early 1950s, he began to write articles related to art; in the mid-1960s, his vision spanned the fields of art and novels, becoming a writer who was not limited by categories and genres. His articles discussing sketches carry a sense of authority as a sketcher; his writings on photography tend to focus on the experiences of the subjects and the lives the photos depict for them - in Berg's writings, photos are never textual Illustrations and text are not extensions of images.
The book "The Strange Meaning of Photography" is written by Jeff. Geoff Dyer from John. In the course of nearly half a century of writing, Berg has refined twenty-four essays on images, which are selected in chronological order. In these articles, Berg is a critic and reader of individual photos. With his unique intensity of attention and often tenderness, he carefully examines the stories in the photos and asks questions about each photo.
Berger not only writes about the meaning of photos, but also expresses different meanings.
