From June 2006 to August 2009, the author published articles about art and life in Hong Kong "Ming Pao" "Sunday Life" under the pseudonym kiss the spider, under the column "Word·Painting". This book "Writing • Painting" compiled 76 of them.
Many people have always believed that art is abstract and difficult to understand, that it has nothing to do with ordinary people, and that it is derailed from society or life. The author explores the close relationship between traditional, modern and contemporary art creation and the Hong Kong context by starting with current events or social phenomena happening at the moment: art comes from life, and art creation is the presentation of reflection on life.
As a creator, the author's experience is: the text presented in the form of painting is a symbolic image, and it is made into a painting; the text presented in the form of writing is both a text and an image symbol. Jacques Derrida once said: The visual is writerly about the visual (art). And Hélène Cixous said: writing and painting are "twin adventures".
With "Writing·Painting", the author uses words to paint different arts, trying to walk two scholars discussing the concept of the relationship between writing and painting. This book is divided into seven chapters──1) Painting; 2) Politics·Society; 3) Women·Sex; 4) So Pure; 5) Revolution·Subversion; ─Introduction and discussion of artistic creations from the sixteenth century to modern times, mainly in Europe and the United States, as well as in South America, Africa, Asia and other countries; art materials covered include painting, sculpture, photography, performance, multi/new media, device etc. The content discusses the theme, form, style, artistic language, social environment of artistic creation, historical and political background, cultural influence and impact of the creation at that time and afterwards, etc.
"Writing·Painting" is presented in the form of two-person emails: dialogues are carried out in the form of short sentences, sentence breaks, back-and-forth questions and answers, repetitions, interspersed back and forth, etc., practicing another writing method──Two-person dialogue: it is open, developable, and Extended discussion; muttering, aiming at developing possibilities of different fluid writing, practical differences. In addition, the author tried to combine art-related literature and philosophy in writing; art and culture are originally multi-disciplinary.
This book invites Hong Kong scholar Dr. Luo Yongsheng (associate professor of the Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong) to write the foreword. Luo Yongsheng believes that the author is obsessed with the study of "Nvshu" (a language created and handed down by women in Jiangyong, Hunan, which is excluded from the orthodox power culture), and she is committed to breaking the existing gender structure in this book and bringing new ideas to writing. The concept can also be regarded as a kind of Nushu to a certain extent.
