The book "Lunar New Year Woodstock: Happy Artistic Resistance in Choi Yuen Village" documents how Choi Yuen Village residents and Hong Kong artists joyfully collaborated amidst their ruined homes during the Lunar New Year. They transcended the limitations of class perspectives through culture and art, challenging the souls of Hong Kong people and Hong Kong itself. The book prompts reflection on how Hong Kong can avoid adopting inhumane development models, renew its culture, and create a more just, reasonable, free, and loving society.
In 1969, the small rural town of Bethel, USA, hosted the Woodstock Music Festival, showcasing the post-war baby boomer generation's pursuit of love and peace. In 2011, Hong Kong, after the tragic demolition of Choi Yuen Village, hosted the Choi Yuen Woodstock Arts Festival, demonstrating that Hong Kong people, after the handover, refused to surrender to reality. They actively and optimistically resisted an unreasonable authority. This book records the grand two-day art festival that attracted thousands of visitors during the Lunar New Year, and through analysis and interviews, explores the possibility of art as a form of happy resistance.
