In the early hours of Tuesday, January 17, 1995, just after the holidays,
a powerful earthquake struck the Awaji-Kobe region of Japan.
The earthquake caused severe devastation, resulting in heavy casualties among residents.

Author Shuhei Hasegawa said:

I drew this book as a dedication to the people who, before that morning arrived,
were living peaceful lives, going about their daily routines in ordinary streets and alleys.
I hope we remember how precious that unremarkable holiday
truly was.
