Made in Tokyo

A shopping street under a railway, a driving school on the top floor of a supermarket, a tennis court spanning a highway... these buildings, which exist in Tokyo in peculiar forms, are "Petite Architecture"! "Petite Architecture" refers to practical buildings that are not bound by existing architectural rules, fully consider the surrounding environment and practical needs, and maximize the use of space. They combine unrelated functions, and although unconventional, they embody the imagination and creativity of daily life. Based on 70 architectural case studies, this book is both a unique guide to Tokyo, leading us to re-understand Tokyo from an architectural perspective through vivid illustrations and text, and a declaration for innovating architectural concepts, transcending rigid architectural aesthetics through the observation of architectural diversity.

The exploration of Tokyo's Petite Architecture—the "Made in Tokyo" project—originated from the accidental discoveries made by Momoyo Kaijima and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, the two founders of Atelier Bow-Wow, in Tokyo. This book is the culmination of more than ten years of field research and theoretical reflection by the "Made in Tokyo" team. It is recognized as a classic work for discussing and documenting Petite Architecture and understanding urban spatial practices, and has had a huge impact on contemporary architectural circles in Japan and China.

Momoyo Kaijima, Japanese architect. In 1992, she co-founded Atelier Bow-Wow with Yoshiharu Tsukamoto. Since 2017, she has been a professor of Architectural Behaviorology at ETH Zurich, and in 2018, she served as the curator of the Japan Pavilion at the 16th Venice International Architecture Biennale. Her main works include "Architectural Ethnography."

Junzo Kuroda, Japanese architect. In 1996, he founded Kuroda Atelier, later renamed Junzo Kuroda Atelier, mainly engaged in architectural design, art direction, corporate identity design, etc.

Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, Japanese architect. In 1992, he co-founded Atelier Bow-Wow with Momoyo Kaijima. Since 2000, he has been a professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology, and in 2012, he was elected an international member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. His main works include "Graphic Anatomy Atelier Bow-Wow" and "Windowscape: The Behavior of Windows."
