Coral, the forests of the ocean

Global ocean temperatures have set a new record for 478 consecutive days over the past year or so, and coral, the most important creator of marine ecosystems, is facing severe bleaching and decline. Coral provides habitats for three-quarters of marine life and can be said to be an indicator of marine environmental health, much like forests are crucial to terrestrial ecosystems. Since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, the Delta Electronics Foundation has been involved in coral restoration projects along Taiwan's coast, utilizing Delta's automation technology and equipment to promote heat-tolerant coral research to ensure genetic diversity, allowing Taiwan's corals to exhibit better heat resistance when facing frequent marine heatwaves. Since 2023, in collaboration with the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology in Keelung, the foundation has further established the Chaojing Coral Conservation Center and sponsored researchers to assist in environmental and ecological conservation.

To encourage more people to care about and understand the theme of coral conservation and optimizing marine ecosystems, and to make readers who cannot regularly get close to corals aware of the endangered status of these animals in the ocean and the conservation movement, this book combines the most important marine scientists in Taiwan and enthusiastic volunteers from the Delta Electronics Foundation. Through exciting and rich questions and images, it is hoped to inspire readers to join the coral restoration project!
