A profound and subtle portrayal of human nature, combined with a high degree of literary connotation and criminal profiling,
A moving elegy for the soul is tempered.

──Can this river wash away the sins and pain of three men?
Or will they drift away forever?

The Anthony Award, Barry Award, and Massachusetts Book Award-winning work has sold more than 2 million copies in the United States. Hammett Award-nominated director Colin Eastwood adapted the film and won the Oscar for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.

"I got into that car twenty-five years ago, and what came back was not the same me. However, twenty-five years later, you are not the same you either."

Jimmy, David and Sean were childhood playmates until one weekend when the three of them were playing in the street, two strange men forced David into a car and drove away in front of Jimmy and Sean. Four days later, David returned from his ordeal, only to become the target of secret pity from adults and ridicule and bullying from children. This unbearable past cast a shadow on the friendship between the three boys, and they drifted apart ever since.

Twenty-five years later──

Jimmy has experienced his young and frivolous gang years and prison life. His first wife passed away while he was serving his sentence, leaving him with only one daughter, Katie. Although he still associates with his gang brothers, he has changed his mind and opened a grocery store. He lives a steady life in the shop and raises his two young daughters with his second wife. His eldest daughter Katie is still his spiritual support. Sean entered the police force and performed very well, but his private emotional world was in chaos. As for David, he, his wife, Celeste, and their son continue to live in the blue-collar community where he grew up, but they never talk about the past.

Early one Sunday morning, the police received a report and found a blood-stained car and the horrific body of a female in a local park. Sean was assigned as the investigating police officer on the case, and after hearing the news, the father of the deceased who rushed to the scene of the corpse was actually his childhood friend Jimmy. After the identity of the female body was confirmed to be Katie, Jimmy almost collapsed emotionally and swore that the account The debt must be repaid with blood.

While Sean struggled to find clues and Jimmy indulged in grief and anger, David's wife Celeste hesitated whether she should continue to hide the heavy secret in her heart: In the early hours of the Sunday morning when the crime occurred, David returned home covered in blood. He said to her in fear, "I might really kill someone..."
