Breakazine 078 "Unfinished Rites of Passage" Introduction

A rite of passage,
always involves a special ceremony, through a series of actions,
including challenges and trials, to establish adult identity.
Although this tradition has gradually faded in modern times,
our various expectations of "becoming an adult" still linger.
The ceremony may still be underway, unconsciously, but it's harder to define when it's truly completed.

This issue of Breakazine listens to young people,
as the "primary stakeholders" of the rite of passage,
sorting out their imagination, feelings, and dilemmas about this process of becoming an adult;
inquiring of youth workers to re-understand the challenges they face in navigating the system and the growth of young people;
and attempting to find alternative perspectives, beyond "youth work,"
to discover other possibilities for growth.

How did we all grow up?
This may be a question that different generations need to answer together.

"Why Can't We Become the Adults We Want to Be?

– A Report on the Face of Hong Kong Youth" Introduction

No one demands they excel, yet they always feel they aren't good enough,
even feeling guilty about resting;
They usually hang out with friends, but when emotionally distressed, they often bear it alone;
They've made many career plans, their education level is getting higher,
but they become more confused after entering the workforce;
Their quality of life is ideal, yet they still have no hope for this place...
Are these also the faces of Hong Kong youth you've seen?

This generation of young people, during their formative years,
seems to have more opportunities and resources than previous generations.
Why can't they become the adults they want to be?
Amidst these inexplicable contradictions, and in more unknown situations faced by young people,
how can we understand this generation of young people more concretely?

Taking "interconnected human perspectives" as the viewpoint,
this book compiles and organizes recent youth research surveys conducted by various organizations
and government statistical data,
to outline the face of this generation of Hong Kong youth and the challenges they face;
it also considers how to respond to the needs of this generation through different practices.

As the world becomes more volatile, and hearts become more anxious,
the task this era gives us is to learn how to be together,
and build a community of interconnected individuals.
