Copy a person On Behalf of One
Xie Minzhen learned calligraphy with his teacher since he was a child. The artistic tradition of calligraphy attaches great importance to imitation, to appreciate the air from the ancients' brushwork, so as to enrich one's own creation.
In "Copying a Person", Xie Minzhen tries to return to the original point of calligraphy written by the ancients: letters. The author imagines and imitates other people's signatures, just like a secretary acting on behalf of a letter. The characters he signs include ancient and modern Chinese and foreign artists he admires, relatives and friends around him, and romantic figures who are both true and false.
Hsieh has been practicing Chinese calligraphy since his childhood.
In the art of calligraphy, there is a long tradition of learning and imitating ancient masters' works, through which ones excel in their own artistic pursuits.
On Behalf of One comes back to the original motive of all calligraphy — that is to write letters. Hsieh imitates and imagines how people sign their names. He signs on behalf of these great people including his family and friends, classic and modern artists, real and fictional celebrities, from the East and the West.
