This year marks exactly twenty years since the publication of Mr. Bai Xianyong's short story collection "Taipei People." This collection has almost achieved classic status in the field of modern Taiwanese literature and even in the entire overseas Chinese-language literary circle. I remember the late writer Sanmao once saying that she grew up reading Bai Xianyong's novels, and even as an adult, she could not forget the helpless, desolate beauty depicted by Bai Xianyong. There are certainly many writers who share this feeling, not just Sanmao. When I chat with various Chinese-language writers abroad, Bai Xianyong's name is always difficult to avoid in conversation. Many works in the world can become famous for a time for various reasons, but very few are recognized as having a pervasive edifying and nurturing significance for the next generation of writers and are remembered reverently by people for a long time. "Taipei People" has evidently become one of them.

Bai Xianyong's "Taipei People" is one of the few classic works in modern Chinese short stories that can be passed down through generations. Since its publication in 1971, it has been continuously praised. The Erya edition of "Taipei People" is the latest standard edition, personally proofread by Bai Xianyong and reset in Old Five Song type, totaling 300 pages and worthy of collection.
