John. Berg's Longest Selling Art Review Classic!
explore the way we see art and the world,
A classic of visual art at its most refined and impactful.
Watching comes before words. Children see and recognize first, and then speak.
▌By seeing, we confirm that we are in the world around us; we explain this world with words, but words can never restore the fact that the world surrounds us. The relationship between the world we see and the world we know has never been determined.
▌Our knowledge and beliefs affect the way we see things. Once we are able to see, we soon realize that we too can be seen.
▌When an image is presented as a work of art, the way we view it is influenced by the whole set of artistic perceptions we have learned.
John. Berg's "Ways of Seeing" emphasizes that both "form" and "argument" are equally important, trying to arouse readers' questioning and exploring how we view paintings... This will undoubtedly change the way readers view images.
Although the whole book is named after chapters, readers can read it in any order they like. Four of the chapters are composed of text and images, and the other three are images only. The chapters composed of images are themed on the way of viewing the female body and various contradictory aspects in the tradition of oil painting. Although there are no words, the questions they try to raise are no less than the chapters with words. In these passages on images, the authors sometimes do not provide any relevant information for fear that such information might distract the reader from what the images are saying.
First published in 1972, this book is based on the BBC's TV film of the same name. It is the most thought-provoking and influential classic among all the books about art. Entry status remains the same.
"Ways of Seeing" is John Berger's most impactful work on visual art. It talks about the social role of the mainstream tradition of Western art, and how ideology and technology influence the way we see art and the world. It is the most concise and most Challenging representative works. ——Lloyd, Senior Lecturer, School of Communication, Trinity and All Saints University College, Leeds, UK Lloyd Spencer
John Berger strikes at the heart of the professional art critic's mystery...he is the liberator of images: once we allow paintings to directly affect us, we are in a better position to make meaningful judgments. ——British art critic Peter. Peter Fuller
The impact of this book has been astonishing. It opened our eyes and brought us into areas of general interest in cultural studies. ——Geoff Dyer, British writer and critic, author of "Ongoing Moments" and other books
