One of the joys of life is to discover the beauty of order contained in nature—the design revealed after cutting cabbage or orange, the shape of shells and butterfly wings. These images are astonishing not only for their beauty, but also because they suggest an order behind their growth, a harmony that exists in nature. What does the existence of this order mean? How far does it cover? The rigor of the form reveals the endless power of this order. Human beings, and their creations (writing, art, architecture), as well as the psychological and social realms, embody this harmony of proportions.

Why do apple blossoms always have five petals? Only a child would ask such a question. Adults don't pay much attention to such things and take them for granted, just like we only use numbers that can be calculated with ten fingers. Yet, when we look deeply into the pattern of an apple blossom, a seashell, or a swinging pendulum, we find a perfection, an uncanny order that awakens in us a sense of wonder that we have known since childhood. Something infinitely greater than we is, yet a part of us, reveals itself; the infinite arises from the limit.

This book explores some of the fundamental pattern-forming processes that operate within strict constraints to create an infinite variety of shapes and harmony. The author continues to explore and measure hundreds of patterns, presenting his findings in detail and vividly: certain proportions appear over and over again in various forms. Through the dynamic integration of opposite ends, these patterns are also repeatedly reproduced in the way things grow and form, as evidenced by the counter-moving spirals in the growth process of plants.

From snowflakes to sunflower hearts, from Greek epics to Japanese haikus, from Apollo statues to Tibetan Buddha statues, from hieroglyphs to ideograms, measure the immeasurable, explore the limits of proportion and sharing of all things, and create a harmonious relationship from differences. Open the window to see the infinite in the limit.
