The life wisdom of the French illustrator Sambe for you who have pursued, lost, laughed, and longed for friendship
"I believe it's like the feeling of being in love: the feeling comes, it falls on us, and then, we have to deal with it,
Because there's some duty, some obligation, some kind of ritual..."
Today, relationships become about communicating worries and seeking comfort. To escape this brutality, Sambe said, friendship depends on silence—
"Loyalty is the highest priority. Have a strong focus on your friends and keep your sanity at a distance."
After "Childhood", the second book of long interviews + paintings is published with emotion
In a lengthy dialogue for this book, Sambe confesses to interviewer Marc LeCarpentier:
"Everything in friendship is not easy. Friendship needs to be low-key, cautious and self-reliant, and loyal." The proof is in the paintings.
Most of the unpublished paintings included in this book provide a clear image of the unfathomable mysteries of our emotions, which cannot help but make people smile.
Humorists listen to our brains with the insight of skeptics, steeped in melancholic diagnoses, but cloaking sober pessimism with wit and lightness, inviting all to smile at their innate weaknesses and thereby forgive them. Jean-Jacques Sembey did not escape this law, he questioned with his usual kind, mischievous, and cunning style, the objects of his questioning are the various rules that guide human relationships.
Whether friendship is based on some obscure obstacle (Raoul Taburin), or on sharing some trouble together (Why Does Marceline Blush? [Monsieur Lambert]), or It's up to the other person (Monsieur Lambert) . . . Friendship in any case depends on some ritualistic behavior, built up bit by bit.
However, even if these happy children are walking side by side, these wives are slowly riding bicycles, and these few men are greeting each other from a distance, even if these characters express their unspoken happiness, they also reveal that friendship can last forever It's not easy. After these hidden and beautiful moments of harmony, dialogue broke the silence, but dialogue is not necessarily the best catalyst for friendship, an unspoken agreement, because friendship requires discretion and loyalty.
Or bluntly, or low-key, the humor is there, covering up the heaviness of the mind in a distracting and restrained way, reminding us: Between arrogance and exaggeration, between jealousy and weakness, adult friendship is fragile and fragile, But a child's friendship can be pure and instinctive.
And because Sambe puts friendship at the highest level of human emotion, he uses his paintings to show that the important nourishment of friendship is those precious and rare, fleeting moments and actions. It seems that presumptuousness, innocence, or competitiveness are always lurking in the dark, watching eagerly, and can disturb the fragile balance between individuals at any time.
Although the humor conceals the heaviness of the mind, the evidence is clear and unavoidable: Between arrogance and exaggeration, adult friendship is fragile. And because Sambe puts friendship at the highest level of human emotion, he tells us that the important nutrients of friendship are those precious and rare, fleeting moments and actions.
