Natsume Soseki is an outstanding representative of modern Japanese literature and is known in Japan as the "Great National Author." He entered the literary world during the rise of Japanese naturalism. His works are close to reality, mostly depicting the lives of ordinary people, especially the painful feelings of intellectuals who are conflicted internally and cannot find a way out. They are rich in a strong sense of the times, as well as a strong ethical and moral consciousness and individualistic spirit.
This book collects several of Natsume Soseki's essays, including "The Cuckoo's Painting," a remembrance of a deceased friend, and "The Cat's Grave," which describes the dark humor in everyday life. These essays have Natsume Soseki's distinctive style, with plain and simple language and the unique humor of ordinary people.
