Erich Fromm's 1941 book, "Escape from Freedom," not only serves as an interpretation of the social and political realities after the two World Wars but also offers a systematic and strong critique of contemporary society from a psycho-philosophical perspective. This book is hailed as a masterpiece of psychoanalysis applied to sociology.

Fromm points out: "Traditional society is secure but unfree; modern society is free but insecure. It is this insecure freedom that leads to various tendencies to escape." Although modern society, under the development of capitalism and democratic trends, has liberated various constraints through "freedom" and "individualization," it has sparked a deep-seated anxiety and fear of loneliness in human nature and collective psychology, making people aware of their own insignificance and powerlessness, and further leading to alienation from nature, society, and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, modern people want to escape freedom, subconsciously hoping to return to the stable economic status and power relations of medieval society to seek security and belonging. It is this unhealthy psychological tendency that forms the social basis of extreme nationalism and authoritarianism; and the feelings of isolation and fear are accurately reflected in various self-abandoning behaviors of modern people, such as yearning for authority, following trends, and conforming to social standards.

Against this backdrop, Fromm discusses the influence of politics, culture, and economy on people from a psychoanalytic perspective. He particularly focuses on the psychological dilemmas faced by modern people in capitalist societies and democratic environments, such as value confusion, inner anxiety, and alienation in interpersonal relationships. He deeply analyzes the historical causes behind these dilemmas and points out how humans should live rationally, create happiness, and establish a good social structure.
