The Road to Serfdom is the most widely known political philosophy work by Nobel laureate F.A. Hayek (1899-1992).
In the book, Hayek points out that the welfare state is not a continuation of liberalism in peaceful times, but rather a movement towards totalitarianism. Therefore, he believes that the pursuit of a planned economy will inevitably lead to totalitarianism. Hayek repeatedly reiterates his belief in classical liberalism and opposes all forms of planned economy. He does not oppose government actions but believes that these actions must be moderate and conform to his concept of the rule of law. He also points out that a good society requires a sound legal system and a moral framework to be effectively maintained.
More than seventy years after its publication, the book's influence remains undiminished. It can be said that The Road to Serfdom has eternal significance.
About the Author
F. A. Hayek (Friedrich August von Hayek, 1899-1992) was born in Austria into an intellectual family in Vienna. Hayek obtained doctorates in law and political science from the University of Vienna. Hayek is one of the greatest economists of the twentieth century, with numerous works to his name. The Road to Serfdom is his most widely known work.
Teng Weizao (1917-2008), born in Funing, Jiangsu, was a renowned Chinese economist and educator. He graduated from Zhejiang University with a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1942 and obtained a master's degree in economics from Southwest Associated University in 1944. He began working at Nankai University in 1946 and served as its president from 1981 to 1986. Teng Weizao was the president of the Chinese Association for American Economic Studies and was the first Chinese expert to be appointed as a senior advisor by the United Nations. He passed away in Tianjin in 2008.
Zhu Zongfeng (1893-1974), born in Baxian, Chongqing. He studied at Guangyi School in Chongqing in his early years, and later graduated from St. John's University Preparatory School in Shanghai. After returning to Chongqing, he worked successively at Guangyi School and the U.S. Consulate in Chongqing. He also worked at the Yichang Salt Inspectorate in Hubei and served as Lu Zuofu's English secretary at the Minsheng Company in Chongqing. After the Anti-Japanese War, he worked as an English translator at the Bank of China in Chongqing for a long time, serving as the head of the English section, responsible for compiling and translating financial and economic information for the bank. After retiring in 1950, he lived in Tianjin for an extended period. In 1960, he left Tianjin for Sichuan and passed away in Yibin, Sichuan, in 1974.
