My friend tripped someone,

But told everyone I did it.

No one doubted him, no one believed me,

I became the "bad kid"...

★ First-person perspective allows children to experience the plight of being "wronged" and consider how to convey facts and resolve misunderstandings.

★ When disputes arise, learn to think from different perspectives, rationally sort out facts, and avoid making hasty judgments.

★ Through the protagonist's experience, empathize with adults and children who have suffered from misunderstandings, transforming the pain of past mistreatment into the gentleness of not harming others in the future.

After school, A-Tai, Xiao-Li, and I walked home together.

Xiao-Li tripped, and A-Tai told everyone I did it.

No matter how I explained, no one believed me.

Mom and Dad said I was a "bad kid who lies after making a mistake";

Xiao-Li's mother accused me, for telling the truth, of "blaming others";

Classmates I met on the street chased me with clenched fists;

Other classmates wouldn't even look at me;

Whenever something bad happened at school and no one knew who did it,

The teacher would call me to the office.

As the "bad kid,"

What can I do to make others hear my voice...

“No one believed me then” depicts how a small lie changed the life of the protagonist crow "I," turning him into a "bad kid" who made mistakes but refused to repent. The picture book uses a first-person narrative, and the protagonist's frank and direct monologue makes readers unable to help but put themselves in his shoes, empathizing with his grievances, sadness, anger, and loneliness, and further considering what caused the protagonist to fall into such a situation?

A-Tai, who lied after making a mistake and shifted the blame to the protagonist, is certainly at fault; but what hurt the protagonist the most were the parents, teachers, and classmates who completely accepted A-Tai's lie and were unwilling to listen to the protagonist's explanation. They labeled the protagonist as a "bad kid," and no matter how the protagonist explained, they were unwilling to let go of their prejudice and listen to his side of the story; they even used bullying tactics such as silent treatment, threats, and exclusion to force the protagonist to "confess"—such things are cruel but often happen in reality. Whether adults or children, everyone may be misunderstood at some point, and may also hurt others because of misunderstandings. To prevent the protagonist's tragedy from truly happening in life, what should we do?

Through "No one believed me then," parents and teachers can discuss with children:

◆ Why is lying wrong? What harm can lies bring to others?

◆ When misunderstood, what is the best way to communicate with the other party to be heard?

【Suitable for lower elementary school students】

◆ To understand the truth of a matter, how can one collect information so as not to hear only one side of the story?

◆ When someone makes a mistake, is it acceptable to use harmful means to force them to "admit their mistake"?

【Suitable for middle elementary school students】

◆ How do stereotypes and labels affect our perception of others? Are judgments based on these fair?

◆ Why is "truth" important? Besides harming the "truth," what negative impacts do extreme remarks and fake news on news media and social media have on our society?
