Despite being hailed as a master of stream-of-consciousness novels in contemporary Hong Kong, Liu Yichang wrote in the preface to "The Drunkard": "'Interior monologue' and 'stream of consciousness' are both novel writing techniques, not genres. Novelists are not obliged to use these techniques when exploring inner realities. As a modern novelist, one must have the courage to create and experiment with new techniques and methods of expression, in order to keep up with the times, or even surpass them."

Liu Yichang (December 7, 1918 – June 8, 2018) was a renowned Hong Kong novelist and editor. His famous works, "Tête-bêche" and "The Drunkard," were sources of inspiration for Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai, leading to the films "In the Mood for Love" and "2046," respectively. In 2010, veteran Hong Kong film critic Wong Kwok-shiu adapted "The Drunkard" into a film.
