In 1918, on the assembly line of the U.S. Radium Corporation, a group of female workers known as the "Radium Girls" were responsible for painting luminous material on watch dials. The factory required them to moisten the brush tips in their mouths before painting. As they repeatedly performed the "lick, dip, paint" actions, radium entered their bodies, threatening their lives, and many of them died as a result.
